This manual provides guidelines for religious congregations interested in setting up programs to sponsor refugees. The manual describes the psychological implications of the refugee experience and discusses initial steps in organizing for sponsorship. Detailed information is provided for sponsors regarding: finances and mobilization of resources; housing provisions and refugee introduction to home management; English language instruction; assistance in securing employment; educational and vocational training; provision of transportation; refugee rights and responsibilities; medical and dental health care; mental health and social integration; and religious/spiritual resources. A list of resources on refugees and refugee problems is included. Appendices describe the immigration and refugee program of the Church World Service (the relief, refugee assistance, and development arm of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States), and provide directories of church affliated agencies and individuals involved in refugee resettlement.
