An Attitudinal and Interest Survey to Determine Possible Development of Community Education for Glencoe, Oklahoma.
Oklahoma State Univ., Stillwater. Community Education Center.
A 1978 preliminary study assessed the attitudes of the residents of Glencoe, Oklahoma, concerning the existing school system and the interest in possible development of a community education program. A door to door and telephone survey was administered to 157 households (a 50% sampling), using a 15-item questionnaire, to determine the attitude toward community education. Results indicated the vast majority of the residents had little or no knowledge of community education, but more than half the respondents indicated a desire for such courses. It was recommended that plans for a community education program start immediately. Initially only a few of the suggested courses would be offered. An informational packet, containing a post card to be filled out and returned, was sent out to gather confidential information about the way the community felt about the present school. Although the 66 responses revealed concern about non-athletic offerings such as curriculum and staff attitudes, over half the respondents felt the school was doing a good job educating the children, serving the community's needs, and maximizing use of the school facilities. Appendices include the survey instruments, letters used in soliciting responses, and a map of the town. (AH)
