What Can Be Done to Improve Nutrition Education Efforts in the Schools? Report to the Secretary of Agriculture by the U.S. General Accounting Office

This report discusses the importance of nutrition education in the elementary and secondary schools as it relates to (1) improving eating habits, (2) reducing food waste, and (3) aiding or reducing the need for other federally supported nutrition education activities. Also discussed is the status of nutrition education in the schools and what the Federal Government can do to help improve it. Appendices include lists of GAO publications on various federal food and nutrition efforts and on federally funded nutrition education and related projects; a description of the Nutrition Education Training activities in California, Illinois, New York, and Texas; and a copy of a letter issued to GAO from the Assistant Secretary for Food and Consumer Services.
