This handbook, designed to assist a beginning Head Start caregiver, includes guidelines for planning and organizing class activities in order to meet the individual child's needs and interests. First, the document outlines some effective ways for dealing with discipline problems, planning classroom sessions, encouraging the child's self-selection of activities, and working with parents. Then it lists various self-selected activities a child might choose to participate in and describes the caregiver role in each. Presented are activities in the areas of art, block-building, games, housekeeping, playdough, science, waterplay, woodworking, mealtime, cooking experience, active play, field trips, rug time, favorite stories, and finger plays.
