Research Findings Concerned with Fathers' Impact on Their Preschoolers.
Klein, Charlotte M.; Pelow, Randall A.
This paper discusses research findings concerned with the reemergent recognition of the role of the father in early childrearing, the attitudes these fathers have towards their parenting role, and the identifiable impact they have on their progeny. Following a brief review of the literature on (1) how the American culture prepares boys for fatherhood, and (2) problems in beginning fatherhood, a discussion is presented of specific spheres of paternal influence on the child's development (including language acquisition, socialization, cognitive development, and sex role development.) The influence of paternal absence on the child's development is also briefly examined. Finally, the paper focuses on fathers of children approaching school entrance and discusses the importance of this event for the father and also the importance of the father to the event. (MP)
