Degree Description for Associate Degrees in Nursing.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Regents External Degree Program.
Information is provided on two external degree programs in nursing offered by the University of the State of New York, which operate through a program of assessment and proficiency examinations rather than of instruction. After Part I introduces the programs and their requirements, Part II provides information on accreditation and licensure. In Part III, the Associate in Applied Science (Nursing) and the Associate in Science (Nursing) degrees are compared and advice is given on selecting the program appropriate to a student's background and objectives. Part IV delineates the general education requirements in humanities, social sciences/history, and natural sciences/mathematics, and identifies methods of earning credit to satisfy these requirements (e.g., through previous college courses, previous degrees, and special assessment). Part V outlines the nursing requirements, which are the same for both degrees, including demonstrated knowledge in four nursing areas and successful completion of the Clinical Performance in Nursing Examination. In Part VI, procedures and advice are provided for individuals interested in pursuing either of the degrees. Finally, Parts VII and VIII identify the recognized proficiency examinations which may be used to earn credit for the nursing degree or fulfill general education requirements. (HB)
