Field Experience in Postsecondary Education: A Guidebook for Action.
Schuttenberg, Ernest M.; Poppenhagen, Brent W.
Four main areas are addressed in this guide for learners and mentors in internship experiences in postsecondary education: (1) career orientation and planning; (2) experiential learning theory; (3) individual learning and development; and (4) program implementation and evaluation. Part One of the text identifies the structure of work in postsecondary organizations, discussing the many types of postsecondary institutions and their scope, and prospects for careers among these alternative educational environments. Selected readings are included on the specific nature of educator roles: traditional career prospects in students affairs, adult education, professional education, education and counseling in business/industry sectors, and educator training. Part Two discusses the characteristics of experiential learning, including traditional and emerging models and designs for active learning. Selected readings cover an andragogical approach, taxonomy, the community as a resource, and responsibility. Part Three identifies internship models and outlines for learning approaches, including a learning contract, the action research project option, and guidelines of the preparation of job search materials. Selected readings are on journal writing techniques and resume writing. Evaluation and research are covered in Part Four, which gives an evaluation model and results of a research study with participants in a postsecondary practicum similar in design to the internship model described in this volume. The selected readings discuss recommendations for assessor improvement and evaluation of field-based learning programs. Appendices include 17 forms, such as the participant resume, learning goals self-evaluation form, log entry form, follow-up survey, and internship perception questionnaire. (LC/Author)
