Literary Genres and Style.
Ajay, Helen
The purpose of this paper is to describe some general relationships between the concepts of literary genre and writing style. The discussion concentrates on the following topics: (1) possible classification schemes for genres, including stylistic aspects associated with each scheme; (2) concepts from literary criticsm that are related to both genre and style; and (3) current work in linguistics and stylistics that is relevant to the relationship between genre and style and holds promise for eventually clarifying both concepts and the interrelationships between them. The bulk of the paper--three appendixes--offers a comprehensive alphabetical listing of literary generic terms, an extensive glossary of literary genres, and a taxonomy of generic forms (including both literary and nonliterary types).
