Training Group Leaders. Leadership Pamphlet #8.
Adult Education Association of U.S.A., Washington, DC.
This pamphlet on training group leaders is the eighth of 16 in a series to provide leaders in adult activities with sound introductory material to give practical help in using a method of adult education or working in a particular area. Its objective is to help leaders learn knowledges, attitudes, and skills to improve the quality of their performance in leadership positions. Nine articles and how-tos are included. The introduction considers leadership training as a prerequisite to democracy. "Can Training Be Education?" discusses leadership development as training--an educational process including a practice element. "The Functions of Leadership" lists the functions. The next four articles consider various elements of the training process. These are "The Conditions for Good Training,""The Role of the Trainer,""The Training Process" (getting ready to change, making the change, transferring changes back home), and "Designing the Training Group.""Selecting Leaders for Training" looks at a study of characteristics and attitude changes of factory workers chosen for leadership roles. The final article, "Measuring Leadership Performance," provides a checklist to evaluate one's own performance of leadership functions. (YLB)
