There are three major objectives: (1) recognizing persuasive use of words, vague and imprecise words, multiple meanings conveyed by a single word, and propaganda techniques; (2) evaluating material by verifying information, finding contradictions, and making comparisons of sources to support a point of view; and (3) generalizing as to the author's purpose and form of writing and thinking, such as fact, fiction, or opinion, inductive and deductive reasoning, and supportive statements.
