This packet is the first of five developed as a set of self-appraisal instruments with which teachers (and others) can systematically examine their instruction methods in communication skills. The packet contains forms for teachers, students, administrators, and parents addressing two levels of specificity: responses to the overall communication skills program and responses to a teacher's practices and policies within a single kind of class situation. The ten sections of this packet on responding to literature address the following: (1) background information, (2) types of inclusion, (3) purposes for literature study, (4) selecting literature for study, (5) prereading and previewing practices, (6) encountering the literature, (7) responding to literature, (8) the response environment, (9) evaluating students' knowledge about and understanding of literature, and (10) supporting the response to literature program.
