Four keynote speeches and 14 sectional presentations comprise the proceedings of the April 1981 Montana Symposium on Early Education and the Exceptional Child. The first speech, entitled "The Yellow Brick Road--Does it Lead to Oz or Abyss?" by B. Fredericks, stresses the importance of gathering solid research evidence to demonstrate that early childhood programs for the handicapped are not only educationally beneficial but also cost effective. A second speech by Fredericks, "The Country Children--Who Serves Them?" describes two methods of serving rural handicapped children, the rural aide model and a parent training model. N. Haring, in "How to Tell Who You're Teaching Without a Label," stresses the disadvantages of labeling handicapped children and proposes that intervention strategies be identified instead. M. Karnes offers "Components of an Exemplary Program for Young Handicapped Children" and stresses the value of each individual, the child, his/her family, and the staff.
