Characteristics of ESL students are described and differentiated. Several typical programs are described. The needs of ESL students outside the classroom are dealt with. An overview of the history of ESL instruction precedes discussions of specific aspects of methodology, which focus on theory into practice and teacher education. An annotated bibliography of 11 basic works is included.
