Gayspeak: Gay Male & Lesbian Communication.
Chesebro, James W., Ed.
In a departure from previous statistical studies, this book focuses on the social responses to homosexuality rather than on homosexual behavior itself. The essays in the book maintain that communication--how gay men and lesbians relate to one another as well as to heterosexuals--is the major factor that determines public opinion about homosexuality. The 25 essays on homosexual communication are grouped under the following subject areas: (1) the social meanings of the words homosexual, gay, and lesbian; (2) inside the gay community; (3) homophobia; (4) institutional forces shaping the public images of gay males and lesbians; (5) gay liberation as a rhetorical movement; and (6) gay rights and political campaigns.
