Developing Reading Skills: A Practical Guide to Reading Comprehension Exercises.
Grellet, Francoise
This book is presented for teachers who do not use a reading course and who wish to produce their own material as well as for individuals developing materials for tailor-made courses. Various types of reading comprehension exercises are described and classified. The exercise-types suggested can be adapted for all reading levels. The book begins with a review of reading and reading comprehension and discusses some issues to be considered when producing or using reading comprehension exercises. Reading comprehension in the classroom and reading comprehension exercise-types are also discussed. Exercises focus on: (1) reading techniques and sensitizing the reader, improving reading speed, and progressing from skimming to scanning; (2) conveying the aim and function of the text, its organization, and its thematization; (3) the understanding of meaning including both the non-linguistic and linguistic responses to the text; and (4) assessing the text in terms of fact versus opinion and the writer's intention.
