Educating the Handicapped Student in the Regular Classroom. An Interdisciplinary Preparation Program for Teachers and Administrators.

An overview is presented of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's (UNL) Dean's Mainstreaming Project. The three-year project at UNL's Teachers College adopted an approach that integrates instruction and practicum experiences with handicapped students into the existing teacher education program. The project's major goal is to ensure consolidation of faculty efforts to adopt education for the handicapped into existing curricular structures. The project report includes information on: (1) program budgeting; (2) educational significance, need, and impact of the project; (3) project accomplishments for 1979-1980 in the areas of curriculum development, definition of competencies, faculty development, evaluation, and instructional materials development; (4) goals and objectives for 1980-1981 in the areas of providing leadership and assistance, faculty development, inservice improvement, instructional materials development, and evaluation; and (5) methods and procedures for attaining these goals. Appendices contain reports on specific accomplishments and projections for future goals. (JD)
