Guidelines for the Tutor of Mathematics: An Aid for Student Tutors, Paraprofessionals, and Teacher Assistants.
Kepner, Henry S., Jr.; Johnson, David R.
Presented is material designed to be a set of guidelines and suggestions for effective tutoring in mathematics. The prospective tutor, although frequently successful in mathematics, usually lacks teaching skills. While the document is short enough to be read in a single sitting, it is felt that the ideas and suggestions provided will be most valuable when specific sections are reread at appropriate times in the tutor's experience. Successful tutoring is not viewed as an exact science, rather it is based on thorough planning and good communication between student and tutor. Individual chapter titles are: (1) The Challenge: Communication; (2) The First Sessions; (3) Preparation for Tutoring Sessions; (4) The Tutoring Session; (5) Evaluation; (6) Preparation for Tests and Examinations; (7) Summary; and (8) Annotated Bibliography.
