The Effects of 'Sesame Street' on Pre-School Learning and Behavior.
Panos, Nancy
Literature dealing with the effects of the television program "Sesame Street" on preschool children's learning and behavior is examined. The bulk of the paper consists of annotations which provide (1) background information on the program's evolution, goals and objectives, and format; (2) information on the effectiveness of the program on the learning and behavior of preschool children; and (3) negative evaluations of the program and overall evaluations of summative research. Among the conclusions it is suggested that "Sesame Street" has successfully adapted commercial television approaches and techniques to teaching the disadvantaged child and that educators and parents have become more aware of children's mental capacities. However, it is cautioned that no one style of television programming is best for all children. A summary and recommendations are also provided. (Author/JA)
