The Study of Religion in Church-Related Higher Education: A Report.
Bucher, Glenn R.
The programs of the study of religion at 14 religion departments at church-related colleges are compared. The nature of the study of religion is considered with reference to the nature of the institution in which it is conducted, and the potential contribution of such departments in the future development of the study of religion as a discipline is evaluated. The analysis focuses on the department's stated purposes and programs, faculty profiles, curricular offerings, special curricular programs, extracurricular continuing education programs, and faculty and/or department professional involvements with the sponsoring religious body. The following interpretations of the findings are offered: the departments with the most clarity about their purpose and program were those who understood their work with reference to the identity of the institution and the sponsoring religious body and whose context, religiously speaking, is distinctive ("embodying" and Roman Catholic institutions); those departments with the least clarity about their purpose and program are those in the "proclaiming" category, whose departmental orientation falls somewhere between Christian studies and religious studies, and whose institution and sponsoring religious body are unclear about their own role in higher education. Additionally, there is an increased emphasis on the importance of first and second level all-college religion courses for the student with general interest; increased concern about the decreasing number of majors; increased reliance upon social scientific models, methods, and data; and increased interest in the department of religion's role in general education or core studies. Overall, considerable diversity was found to characterize the study of religion in private church-related higher education. (SW)
