Creative Drama: A Useful Tool for the Institutionalized Aged.
Coffman, Victoria T.
Noting that creative drama activities can have a therapeutic value when used with the elderly in nursing homes, this paper outlines a creative drama program that was used in such a setting. Various sections of the paper describe (1) the nursing home setting, the nature of the participants, and the effects the program had upon them; (2) dramatic exercises used in the program; (3) the role of the activity leaders in the program; and (4) guidelines for designing activities to meet the needs of the institutionalized elderly. The paper concludes that such programs for the elderly can increase their physical activity and mobility, as well as provide them with an opportunity to reminisce, to deal with important issues, to put their lives in order, and to gain a sense of well-being.
