A Synthesis of Research on the Performance Appraisal Interview.
Intended for use by managers, consultants, and teachers of courses in organization behavior, organizational communication, and interviewing, this literature review brings together a great deal of what has been written concerning appraisal interviews. Based on the review, the paper offers 13 guidelines for preparing and conducting appraisal interviews, including (1) plan, schedule, and choose the right setting for the interview; (2) concentrate on results rather than personality; (3) account for variables outside the employee's control; (4) discuss the employee's future with the company; (5) explore the job requirements; (6) develop goals for future performance; (7) give appropriate praise and criticism; (8) stay on the subject; (9) use discussion summaries; (10) establish the proper climate; and (11) allow the interviewee to participate. The paper also offers suggestions for future research in the area. (FL)
