The purpose of this book is to provide a variety of practical, challenging ideas for teaching reading skills and motivating students to read for pleasure. Sections of the book provide information on the following topics: (1) the principal's role in reading instruction; (2) developing a teaching strategy--philosophy, goals, and objectives; (3) checklists of reading skills sequences for grades kindergarten through 12; (4) motivational strategies, such as book certificate programs, and suggested reading resource materials; (5) teaching strategies, such as informal silent comprehension, reading with a purpose, textbook evaluation, and reading through the modality approach; (6) reading in the content areas; (7) reading activities throughout the grades; (8) the reading specialist; and (9) an introduction to the reading section of the Oklahoma State Department of Education, including its objectives and activities, its inservice program, and its needs assessment procedures and surveys. Appendixes contain additional information for addressing learning styles with different teaching strategies, individualizing the reading program through organizational strategies, evaluating textbooks, and defining reading terminology.
