Validation of Welding Curriculum Manual.

A study was conducted to validate the welding curriculum materials developed and published by the Oklahoma State Department of Vocational and Technical Education. Twelve instructors collected achievement data (unit tests, assignment sheets, and evaluation forms) concerning the performance of 280 students on a total of 46 instructional units. Item analyses, including frequency counts of the number of correct answers and the percentage of students having a correct answer on a given item, were made for the tests and assignment sheets. The study identified those concepts which 20 percent or more of the students were not achieving. Data indicated that the manual should be revised to meet the needs of instructors and industry. Accurate illustrations or photos are also needed. In addition, short-answer questions should be replaced by multiple-choice type questions. More activities should be included to allow students to practice measuring and drawing objects. Finally, the curriculum specialist should determine whether all information included in the units is relevant to job skills being taught. Recommendations called for future studies to ascertain if visual aids, currently under development, will raise student achievement in the welding area.
