Critical Consumers and Creative Producers: A Model for Integrating Language Arts Instruction.

An instructional model is described for using television production and television viewing as subject matter to integrate the development of communication competence in the language arts. The theoretical background of the model is explained, as is the application of the model in a pilot demonstration study. A sample usit is offered, with 11 competencies for promoting the understanding of the interrelationships of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in a problem solving context (across medium and mode). Each competency is followed by lists of activities, learning objectives, instructional strategies, and evaluation procedures. (RL)
