A Parent Guide to Title IX.
Michigan State Board of Education, Lansing.
This report outlines the rights of parents as consumers of educational programs as they are described under Title IX, the law that prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs which receive Federal financial assistance. The report concentrates on what parents can expect from a school district in relation to the school's legal and professional responsibility for providing equal educational opportunities for girls and boys. Areas covered include: (1) a definition of Title IX; (2) requirements of Title IX, such as a program coordinator, grievance procedure, notification of policy, Statement of Assurance, and program self evaluation; (3) students' rights to take any class; (4) students' rights to be treated equally in and outside of class; (5) students' rights to participate in athletics; and (6) suggestions for redress if parents feel that their children's rights under Title IX are being violated.
