Enquiry into Good Teaching. A Survey of Staff Opinions Undertaken Under the Auspices of the Research Committee of Nedlands College. Report Number 6.
This study arose out of a concern of the Nedlands College staff about the lack of written objectives on the aims of the teacher education program. A survey was conducted among members of the staff addressing their expectations with regard to students. The final objective of the survey was to define good teaching and the aims and objectives of a teacher education institution. A series of competency scales, each relating a set of basic assumptions about teaching, was presented to faculty members. In order to obtain a balanced range of items, statements appropriate to each competency scale, i.e. professional knowledge, teaching techniques, classroom management, social interaction, and personal attributes, were included. An index to the statements used in the survey is included in this report, as well as tables indicating the rank given to specific teacher characteristics and behaviors. (JD)
