Early Childhood Services in Sweden: Observations of Some Features of Children's Services and Teacher Education Made During a Study Visit August-September 1979.

Several aspects of children's services and teacher education in Sweden, including day care centers and preschool teacher education, are reported by an Australian early childhood educator who, as the recipient of a guest scholarship, visited Sweden in August/September, 1979. The report includes (1) the itinerary of the visit; (2) a few facts about life in Sweden; (3) an overview of family and child care policy; (4) a summary of recommendations of commissions that have affected the development of policy for early childhood education; and (5) accounts of the growth of day care, the development of policy for preschool education, and the funding of child care services. Visits were made to seven day care centers and impressions of basic features of day care provision in Sweden are given. Innovative programs and associated research and evaluation activities; the administration of child care in Malmo; preschool teacher education in Sweden (including different types of training programs and their organization); and the basic dimensions of the Swedish school system are described in detail. Brief descriptions of each visit made are appended. (Author/RH)
