A research project was undertaken to make an inventory of the needs in the training and professional development of directors, assistant directors, and teachers in elementary and secondary French-language schools in Ontario. The report is divided into three sections and a conclusion. The first chapter reviews the literature on the evaluation of needs and professional development in education and on the types of competencies required of directors and teachers in elementary and secondary schools. Each section of the chapter includes a discussion of the implications of the literature on the elaboration of the project in question. The second chapter, dealing with the methodology used in the study, describes: (1) strategies in the development of the questionnaire, (2) the population studied, (3) the techniques for gathering the data, and (4) the statistical analysis used. The third chapter presents the data and interprets them according to the priority of needs for each group of respondents. The conclusion describes the needs that seem to be most urgent and suggests that another study be undertaken to see how closely the expressed needs correspond to real needs in the training and development of the same directors and teachers.
