National Association for Retarded Citizens, Arlington, TX. Research and Demonstration Inst.
The handbook provides an overview of residential services for mentally retarded persons. An introductory section defines the term and cites major problems associated with the service. Philosophy and 13 basic principles are covered in the second chapter. Among the goals cited in Chapter 3 are learning to learn, skills training, and opportunities to meet hierarchical needs. Burnout is one topic considered in a section on staff factors, while another on environmental influences examines the concept of least restrictive alternative. Program design aspects touch on social skills, mobility, decision making and autonomy, and self care. Suggestions are made for developing and monitoring individual program plans. A final chapter addresses accountability and its implications for advocacy and monitoring. (CL)
