Educational Needs of Pilipino/Pilipino-American Junior High School Students: A Research Project.

The purpose of this study was to identify the educational needs and concerns of Pilipino/Pilipino-American students so that recommendations for a more effective education for these students could be made. Students from one Los Angeles, California junior high school were chosen as the target population. Information was gathered from the students themselves, school staff members, family members, friends and peers, and community groups. Data collecting activities included individual interviews, group interviews, meetings, questionnaires, observations, and document analysis. The concerns identified included: (1) stereotyping Pilipino/Pilipino-American students as academic achievers, (2) the scarcity of information about Pilipino cultural heritage, (3) proper assessment and placement for English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, (4) inadequate ESL classes, (5) identification of gifted children, and (6) lack of ethnic integration in the school studied. The findings were reviewed by a community committee which identified additional concerns and made recommendations for improving the educational situation of Pilipino students.
