An Effort to Improve the Performance of Regional Accreditation Evaluation Teams.
Kells, H. R.
A training project for regional accreditation evaluation teams of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) was evaluated. The project was designed to train WASC team members to understand and use effectively newly-developed standards and to function effectively in team visits. Training procedures were as follows: a workshop for chairpersons, on-site orientation run by chairpersons and other staff, and a follow-up workshop for chairpersons. The role and activities of the project evaluator are outlined, and inferred goals of the training procedures are addressed. Followup questionnaires were administered to the following groups: chairpersons after the initial workshop, each chairperson after the team visit, each team member after the team visit, and each institution after the team visit. Additionally, two chairpersons were observed during on-site training, and training formats of other regional agencies were assessed. A workshop for potential evaluators for nontraditional institutions was also conducted. Changes that will be implemented as a result of the project are outlined. Sample questionnaires and evaluation form and workshop schedules are appended. (SW)
