A Hands-On, Pre-Vocational Module for the Emotionally Disturbed Adolescent: School Store.
The paper describes a school store program designed to improve general work habits such as job attitude, job performance, and punctuality in students (15 to 18 years old) with severe behavior problems. It is explained that the curriculum is devised so that each week students apply for a self selected job by filling out application forms, are interviewed for the jobs, and then evaluated for performance and attitude in the job. Sections contain job descriptions, task listings, prerequisite skills, individualized education programs, evaluation forms and checklists, and performance objectives. The program is reported to result in gains in money management skills (such as counting money, giving change, and calculating total profits) as well as social skils (such as effective communication, speaking courteously, and improved eye contact). Appended materials include a merchandising pre-post test; a school store policy statement; a diagram of the prevocational program which involves assessment, training, work experience, evaluation, placement, and followup components; and a chart of the decision making model.
