Research reports on the nature of speech, instrumentation for the investigation of speech, and practical applications of research are included in this status report for the April 1-June 30, 1980, period. The reports deal with the following topics: (1) the perceptual equivalent of two acoustic cues for a speech contrast is specific to phonetic perception; (2) duplex perception of acoustic patterns as speech and nonspeech; (3) evidence for phonetic processing of cues to place of articulation; (4) some articulatory correlates of perceptual isochrony; (5) effects of utterance continuity on phonetic judgments; (6) laryngeal adjustments in stuttering; (7) letter detection errors on word endings; (8) speaking rate, syllable stress, and vowel identity; (9) sonority and syllabicity as acoustic correlates of perception; (10) influence of vocalic context on perception of the "sh"/"s" distinction; (11) the role of auditory memory in speech perception and discrimination; (12) talker-independent information for vowel identity; (13) context-conditioned specification of vowel identity; and (14) influence of preceding fricative on stop consonant perception.
