Hawaii Educational Assessment Reading Report.

An analysis of the assessment results and general findings of a statewide assessment in reading conducted in Hawaii in 1975 is presented in this report. Chapters provide a perspective on the assessment program, the preparation of the statewide assessment, the methodology used, the procedures for data analysis, and the results and findings of students' reading performance in grades 4, 8, and 11 by seven performance indicators: (1) understands the meanings of words, word phrases, and word relationships; (2) demonstrates a positive attitude toward reading; (3) locates and uses reading resources effectively; (4) follows written directions; (5) gets the main idea and supportive details from a selection; (6) demonstrates that the student can read a variety of materials for various purposes; and (7) demonstrates that the student can read critically. Appendixes provide assessment item numbers by performance indicators and grade level; a language, experience and thinking model; criteria for analysis; the percentage of items below 50%; a summary of the utilization of assessment items; a summary of LET and content prerequisites; and identical items used in all three grade levels by indicator.
