Multiculturalism as State Policy. Conference Report. Second Canadian Conference on Multiculturalism, Government Conference Centre (Ottawa, Ontario, February 13-15, 1976).
Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism, Ottawa (Ontario).
The Second Canadian Conference on Multiculturalism was held to clarify some of the issues upon which multiculturalism as a concept and as a policy depend. Cultural pluralism was investigated within the social, political, and historical framework of Canadian society. The opening session, called "The Bear Pit," invited questions and discussions from the audience in response to five introductory presentations. The second session heard presentations regarding the Francophone viewpoint and the Anglophone viewpoint of multiculturalism as well as a major address about governmental commitment to multicultural policy. During the last conference session, two studies were reported: one dealt with non-official languages and one with majority attitudes. Final presentations included discussions regarding Indian affairs and the United States' attitude toward multiculturalism, and an overview of Canadian cultural pluralism. (MK)
