Texas Assessment of Basic Skills: Instructional Guidelines for Mathematics, Readings, and Writing. Grade 3.
Texas Education Agency, Austin. Div. of Curriculum Development.
Instructional guidelines for grade 3 objectives being tested by the Texas Assessment of Basic Skills (TABS) are presented. The guidelines are designed to be helpful to primary grade teachers in clarifying expectations regarding the TABS tests. Looking at the grade 3 basic skill descriptions will indicate what students in kindergarten through grade 2 should be learning in mathematics, reading, and writing. An introduction for each of the three subjects briefly discusses the behavioral and enabling objectives. Teachers are encouraged to employ the following four instructional principles which will typically lead to greater student success in a skill-based, competency-based instructional program: (1) competency comprehension dealing with a teacher's familiarity with the competency to be taught; (2) task description which lets the student know what the competencies are and why they should be acquired; (3) appropriate practice which deals with providing appropriate practice opportunities for the students; and (4) progress monitoring which urges teachers to attend to the differential progress being made by their students.
