A Needs Assessment for the Development of a Program for the Training of Teachers of Pre- and Early Adolescents.
Schmelter, Raymond Charles
This study was concerned with the need for and interest in both a preservice and graduate program for the training of teachers of pre- and early adolescents. The study also was concerned with identifying specific competencies for teachers in junior high or middle schools. Questionnaires were sent to middle and junior high school teachers and administrators in the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh area. Responses to the questionnaire indicated majority agreement on the following needs: (1) There is a need for a preservice program designed specifically for the training of middle school teachers; (2) Students trained specifically for teaching in middle schools would be employable; (3) There is interest in a preservice program for the training of middle school teachers among middle school administrators; (4) Middle school teachers would enroll in a graduate program designed specifically for them; (5) There is a special need for a separate certification for the middle school teacher; and (6) Competencies needed for teaching in a middle school include ability to recognize and respond to the special needs of adolescents and teaching skills applicable to these students.
