Teacher Training Programs and the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE): A Practical Model for Incorporating LRE Competencies into Existing Teacher Training Curriculum.

This manual is a practical guide for use by schools of education which must comply with the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards for Approval of Teacher Certification Programs. These standards require that competencies needed to educate students in least restrictive environments be incorporated into undergraduate and graduate degree certification programs. Following some brief introductory material on the experience of the Duquesne University School of Education in revising its curriculum and providing assistance in the professional development of its faculty, the manual provides detailed information on the nature and implementation of the state mandate for teacher education, including a listing and explanation of the ten Pennsylvania competencies. The manual also presents procedural information (including worksheets) for the incorporation of individual competencies into curriculum cores, programs, and courses. An annotated bibliography of materials and resources useful in providing preservice and inservice materials is included. The competencies to which each resource is closely related are also indicated for the reader's convenience. (Authors)
