The Improvement of School Programs in Mathematics through a Comprehensive Foundation Program Assessment and Improvement System (FPAIS) Approach Project is described. This project used a multi-pronged approach to reach the objective of reducing mathematics program deficiencies as identified through state-level assessments. The two major ways to bring about needed change were: (1) the development and implementation of curriculum modules into the classroom that would use a newly-structured mathematics program, and (2) the development of a school-level leadership team competent in FPAIS methodologies. The changes in the mathematics program included a variety of assessment and improvement efforts designed to have a lasting impact on learners. A statewide Mathematics Program Guide, a curriculum management system, and a model for a coordinated mathematics program were all developed by the project. Among the report's recommendations, the school-level assessment and improvement model, the curriculum guides, and the new materials are all promoted for immediate coordinated statewide use. (MP)
