Machine Aided Instruction in Aural Comprehension of Indonesian. Final Report.

The project described in this report was begun with the belief that elementary language instruction can be speeded up and made far more pleasant if initial emphasis is given to comprehension and if the requirement to use language productively, in speech or writing, is postponed until a fair comprehension ability has been achieved. It was also felt that a good deal of the drill required for instilling a basic comprehension ability could be mechanized. To achieve this end, equipment was designed and built that students can operate by themselves and lessons were designed and recorded that are compatible with the machine. Machine and lessons together were tried out on a first year Indonesian class at an American university. The progress of this project to date is assessed, and hopeful plans for the future are set forth. (Author/JB)
