Attitudes Toward Science: A Quantitative Synthesis.
Haladyna, Tom; Shaughnessy, Joan
A quantitative synthesis (meta-analysis) was conducted on 49 studies of attitude toward the school subject of science. A conceptual framework for the study of attitudes toward science was introduced. The benefit of such a framework is that it accommodates the results of prior research as well as programmatic future efforts. The results of the synthesis revealed: (1) a lack of integrative quality to these studies; (2) improvement over the years in methodology; and (3) inadequacies in most research reports which inhibit the meaningful interpretations of the results. The research findings reveal: (1) there are small differences in attitudes for boys and girls; (2) sex interacts slightly with many variables but in no systematic way; (3) programs generally have a variable, positive effect on attitude; and (4) some learning environment and teacher variables have been found to be highly related to attitudes.
