The Development of a Court Reporter Training Internship Course at Vermont College.
Kennedy, Patricia
In order to fulfill accreditation requirements set by the National Certification Board for Court and Conference Reporters, the Secretarial Science Department at Vermont College developed an internship course for students in its two-year court reporter training program. The procedures followed in developing the internship course included: (1) identifying and defining prerequisites for the internship; (2) examining court reporter internships at other institutions; (3) estimating the number of interns to be placed during 1980 and 1981; (4) determining the qualifications of intern candidates by examining the skill levels noted on student records; (5) identifying possible internship sites and contacting personnel at these sites; (6) determining the length of time to be spent on the internship; (7) discussing with potential supervisors the possibility of rotating internship placements; (8) preparing a syllabus to include orientation and evaluation seminars; (9) detailing the duties and responsibilities of the intern, the instructor, and the intern's supervisor; and (10) determining evaluation criteria and developing evaluation forms to be completed periodically by the supervisor. The course development report reviews literature concerning the planning of internship courses and discusses outcomes for the project activities listed above. Recommendations, syllabi, evaluation forms, and a bibliography are included. (JP)
