Off Campus/External Degree Education in Georgia: A Status Report. Georgia Professional Standards Commission Issues for Education Series.
Georgia Professional Standards Commission, Atlanta.
Off-campus and external degree programs in Georgia were surveyed in 1978-79 to examine the quality of education of off-campus offerings and standards in teacher education, certification, and staff development. Information was obtained from public school superintendents regarding off-campus credit courses and from colleges located within and outside the state to verify their involvement in off-campus programs. Thirty-nine colleges and universities located in Georgia offered off-campus degree work during the 1978-79 academic year, and 10 out-of-state schools provided off-campus work in Georgia, mainly at military installations. Teacher education programs were one of the major off-campus areas of concentration, and in many cases the work was offered for certification or recertification purposes. The majority of the institutions providing teacher education courses were public colleges and universities located within the state. Types of off-campus offerings and programs offered at military installations and Georgia colleges and universities are examined. Recommendations are offered by the Commission on Off Campus Teacher Education on out-of-state institutions, standards for institutions on military bases, and accreditation. A bibliography and maps indicating the locations of course offerings are included. (SW)
