Strategies for Communication in French, Spanish, German, and English.

Over fifty strategies, designed to help foreign language teachers incorporate the "real communication concept" into exisitng programs, are presented. They are intended to help the learner apply the skills immediately in order to go from skill acquisition to skill usage in as short a time as possible. Applicable to ESL, French, Spanish, and German classes, the strategies deal with aspects of communication such as expression of a personal concern, opinion, or feeling, and ways of getting to know self and others better. Each strategy contains the following elements: (1) objective; (2) linguistic focus; (3) skill focus; (4) procedure; (5) working structure; (6) components, such as word lists or materials to be furnished by the participants; (7) culture; and (8) level. Some of the strategies are followed by additional information in English, French, German, and Spanish. (AMH)
