Mainstreaming the Mentally Retarded: Services to School Personnel and Families of the Handicapped Child.
Roth, Martin R.
Presented at the 1980 annual meeting of the National Association of School Psychologists, the paper discusses two areas in which school psychologists can make significant contributions to facilitate the mainstreaming of mentally retarded children: staff training and supportive and counseling services to parents. Two intervention strategies that have proven successful in dealing with disruptive behavior are reviewed: overcorrection and timeouts. Other aspects covered include the writing of behavioral objectives, crisis intervention techniques, home management techniques, the child's transition from an institutional to a home setting, parent attitudes, and family counseling.
