Planning for Mastery Learning and Accountability.
Hawkins, Wilber
This plan is designed to review and revise the educational program of the Hicksville School District (New York) by means of a systematic approach to curriculum revision, instruction geared to learning, and the monitoring of student progress. Baseline information obtained from a curriculum inventory is a starting point for an analysis of the curriculum. An example is given of the subject of English from kindergarten through grade 12. The curriculum is then analyzed for sequence, duplication, gaps, relevance, and omissions. The objectives that act as guidelines during the curriculum revision process are listed, as are teacher problems that can be solved by curriculum revision. The final section of the paper discusses instruction for mastery learning, quality control through internal audition, and the roles of the principal and the central office. (Author/MLF)
