Reading Achievement and Self-Concept of Fifth Grade Students.
Vereen, Margaret
An investigation of the relationship between children's self-concepts and reading achievement involved 117 fifth grade students in an urban, low socioeconomic area. Reading achievement information was obtained from records of the children's performance on the reading subtests of the Metropolitan Achievement Test, and information concerning self-concept was gathered through the use of the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale. The analysis of the data based on the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation revealed a significant positive relationship between reading achievement and self-concept scores.
