Arts Activities Bank for Parents.
Montgomery County Public Schools, Rockville, MD. Dept. of Instructional Planning and Development.
The guide presents instructions for art activities to be used by parents at home, particularly with handicapped children. The objective is to encourage parents to bring the arts into the lives of these children on a regular basis and also to help them develop basic learning skills, self-esteem, and an interest in the arts. The guide is divided into four sections. Section I focuses on 11 body movement activities, developing skills involving spatial orientation, basic skills, interpretative movement, coordination, and balance. Section II presents eight dramatic activities, including pantomiming, playing games, acting, using puppets, and presenting a short play. Section III includes 15 music activities in three parts, emphasizing sound awareness, rhythm, and singing. Instructions for parents about equipment and making homemade instruments are included, as well as a list of suggested sources, such as songbooks, records, and music catalogs. Section IV presents 15 visual arts activities covering drawing, various types of printmaking and collages, making masks and puppets, and working with paper and clay. The introduction includes notes about time allotment and setting up a work area. For each activity in the four sections the following information is offered: pre-activity instructions including suggestions for types of handicaps, title, objectives, needed materials, teaching process, and variations.
