National Academy of Sciences - National Research Council, Washington, DC.
This book is intended to inform its readers of the conditions that might warrent special attention within the next five years involving current and emerging problems of significance that are identified through scientific research, or in which scientific or technical considerations are of major significance; and opportunities for and constraints on the use of new and existing scientific and technological capabilities which can make a significant contribution to the resolution of these problems. The chapters illustrate the present vitality and direction of much of American science and technology and enable appreciation of both the substance of science and technology and its interaction with the formation of public policy. The 11 chapters are divided into four units: science, technology, topics specific to the United States, and scientific institutions. Each chapter is followed by a short outlook emphasizing five-year trends. (Author/DS)
