Discussing and Evaluating Drafts.
A stage in the development of new courses is discussed. Advice is given to course teams in the social sciences faculty at the Open University (England) on arranging for course team review of drafts of new courses. Several methods are discussed briefly: the traditional method of circulating drafts in the course team and having a discussion with the author; a modification of the traditional method that includes the chairman and/or academic editor in the draft writing; reflective discussion between the author and a single commentator; and written comments to the author, either as notes on the draft or separately submitted. External critical readers can also be used, as can trying out the course on students for credit or for a fee as a method of testing its possibilities. Appended are a staff memo on course testing and notes to course assessors. (MSE)
